The story of amsterdam based studiomfd
YOUR VALUES ARE OUR INGREDIENTS.
With over 20 years of design practice we first learned how to make functional and ergonomic designs, how to make things really work. Then practiced concepts, aesthetics and identities: telling stories and creating mental atmospheres. And finally became competent in branding and spatial brand design: about design’s surplus value of reflecting a brand's values, DNA and identity. That’s where we are today. Your brand comes first, then the story, look & feel, and ultimately purpose and usage. Where today function is a hot item again. Through multitasking trends, multipurpose products and ongoing launches of new software and apps, people not only insisted on spaces to have multi-purpose functions as well, they also expect them to upgrade just as easily. Making offices not just a place to work, neither a shop just a place to buy. Hotels aren't just to sleep either and your brand identity isn't just a label for your product. And that they would stand still is completely out of the question. Interesting times for a designer.
CULTURE + COMMERCE
Studiomfd was founded in Amsterdam late 2006 by Martijn Frank Dirks. Already at young age when he was studying design (BA) at the world-famous Design Academy Eindhoven he dreamed about starting his own design studio. It was Marcel Wanders however who, during an internship at his celebrated studio, suggested him to work a few years in employment first. Marcel acquainted Martijn with Amsterdam’s rich business climate, making him to move to the Dutch capital soon after graduation.
After working for several design agencies and gaining experience in design whilst working for companies such as Mercedes Benz, Amnesty International, LG Electronics, GfK, MTV, Bugaboo and Porsche, he founded Studiomfd December 2006 during his graduation in Retail Design & Communication (MA) at Plymouth University supervised by Professor Rodney Fitch († 2014). Rodney made him to fall in love with Retail, the intersection of commerce and culture.
We have been sustaining this duality in design for more that 12 years at studiomfd, while working for Albert Heijn, Aruba Bank, Beemster, Danone, Douwe Egberts, Driscoll’s, Hyves, ING, Johan Cruyff College, Milner, Old Amsterdam, Radio 538, REV’IT!, Talpa, Tiësto and Waylon, developing highly creative ideas and designs that follow behaviour, relate to region and have a game plan.
Since everyone lives by selling something.
